Problem

A rectangular sheet of copper of mass 11 g11\,\text{g}, density 8.9 g cm−38.9\,\text{g\,cm}^{-3}, and uniform thickness 0.20 mm0.20\,\text{mm} is cut into two identical square plates which are then assembled, with their faces parallel and separated by 0.50 mm0.50\,\text{mm} of air, to form a capacitor. Take ε0=8.85×10−12 C2 N−1 m−2\varepsilon_0 = 8.85 \times 10^{-12}\,\text{C}^2\,\text{N}^{-1}\,\text{m}^{-2}. (i) Determine the length of the side of each square plate. (ii) Calculate the capacitance of the capacitor thus formed. (iii) The capacitor is charged to a potential difference of 200 V200\,\text{V}. Find the energy stored in it. (iv) A plastic dielectric of relative permittivity 3.03.0 completely fills the space between the plates without altering the separation. Calculate the percentage increase in the energy stored when the same potential difference of 200 V200\,\text{V} is applied.
