Problem

Consider a series circuit containing a resistor RR, an inductor LL and a capacitor CC connected to an a.c. source. (a) Write the expressions for the inductive reactance and the capacitive reactance in terms of the supply frequency ff. (b) Explain qualitatively how the net reactance of the circuit changes as the frequency is increased from zero to very high values. (c) Define the condition under which the current in the circuit becomes maximum and name the corresponding frequency. (d) Draw a qualitative sketch showing the variation of the impedance of the circuit with frequency, marking clearly the point at which the current is maximum.
