Problem

A log of wood has mass 50 kg50\,\text{kg} and is in the shape of a rectangular prism measuring 100 cm×25 cm×25 cm100\,\text{cm}\times25\,\text{cm}\times25\,\text{cm}. The log is placed on level ground in three different positions. (i) Calculate the pressure on the ground when the log rests on its largest face (100 cm×25 cm100\,\text{cm}\times25\,\text{cm}). (ii) Calculate the pressure when it rests on its smallest face (25 cm×25 cm25\,\text{cm}\times25\,\text{cm}). (iii) The log is now stood upright on its square end (25 cm×25 cm25\,\text{cm}\times25\,\text{cm}). Calculate the pressure exerted in this position and compare it with your answers to parts (i) and (ii). (iv) Which of the three positions would you recommend for storing the log on soft, wet soil? Justify your answer using the numerical results obtained.
