Problem

Consider a circle with centre OO and radius rr. A point PP lies outside the circle and a straight line ll passes through PP. The perpendicular distance from OO to ll is dd. Answer the following: (i) State the condition that must hold between dd and rr for the line ll to be tangent to the circle. (ii) Justify, with geometric reasoning, why the condition stated in part (i) is necessary and sufficient for ll to be a tangent. (iii) If r=4r = 4 cm and d=4d = 4 cm, what can you conclude about the position of ll with respect to the circle? Explain your answer.
