Problem

A mechanic tightens similar bolts using three different spanners. Each spanner is pulled with a horizontal force, but the lengths and pull-directions differ. Spanner 1: length 0.30 m0.30\,\text{m}, pull is perpendicular to the spanner, force 40 N40\,\text{N}. Spanner 2: length 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m}, pull is at 60∘60^{\circ} to the spanner, force 30 N30\,\text{N}. Spanner 3: length 0.60 m0.60\,\text{m}, pull is perpendicular to the spanner, force 25 N25\,\text{N}. All pulls are applied at the free ends and act in the same sense of rotation about the bolt-axis. (i) Calculate the magnitude of the turning moment produced by each spanner about the bolt-axis. (ii) Rank the three spanners in descending order of the magnitude of torque they produce. (iii) Comment on how both the length of the spanner and the angle of pull influence your ranking.
