Problem

A particle moves along the xx-axis under the action of a variable force F(x)=3x2+2xF(x)=3x^{2}+2x (in newtons), where xx is in metres. The particle is displaced from x=0x=0 to x=2 mx=2\,\text{m}. Its mass is 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} and its initial speed is zero. (i) Calculate the work done by the force during the given displacement. (ii) Using the work–energy theorem, determine the speed of the particle when it reaches x=2 mx=2\,\text{m}. (iii) Find the average value of the force over the interval and comment briefly on how this average compares with the instantaneous force at the start and at the end of the motion.
