A uniform copper wire of resistance R0 is cut into three equal lengths. Each piece is then stretched uniformly so that its length doubles, with no loss of material. The three stretched pieces are connected in parallel to form a new conductor.
(i) Determine the resistance of each stretched piece in terms of R0. Clearly show your working.
(ii) Calculate the equivalent resistance of the parallel combination of the three stretched pieces.
(iii) Compare this equivalent resistance with R0. State the factor by which the resistance has changed and indicate whether it has increased or decreased.
