Problem

A uniform electric field of magnitude 5.0×104 N C−15.0\times10^{4}\,\text{N\,C}^{-1} is directed due east in a laboratory. (i) A plastic bead carrying a charge of +2.0 μC+2.0\,\mu\text{C} is released from rest in this region. Explain qualitatively the direction of the force acting on it and the subsequent motion you expect. (ii) The bead is now replaced by an identical bead carrying −2.0 μC-2.0\,\mu\text{C}. Explain how the direction of the force and the motion will differ from part (i). (iii) Distinguish between electric field and electric force with respect to their dependence on the magnitude and sign of the test charge.
