Problem

Two fixed point charges lie on the xx-axis: +6 μC at x=0x = 0 cm and –3 μC at x=8x = 8 cm. A small positive test charge could be placed at any of three positions on the same axis: • Point A: x=2x = 2 cm • Point B: x=5x = 5 cm • Point C: x=12x = 12 cm Without performing explicit calculations, rank the magnitudes of the net electrostatic force that the test charge would experience at Points A, B, and C from greatest to least, and state the direction of the net force at each point ("toward +x" or "toward –x").
