Problem

Two identical open containers are partially filled—one with water and the other with glycerin. The water has density 1.00×103 kg m−31.00\times10^{3}\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}; glycerin has density 1.26×103 kg m−31.26\times10^{3}\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}. A small pressure probe is lowered 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} below the free surface in each container. (a) Without performing detailed calculations, compare the gauge pressures measured in the two fluids and justify your reasoning. (b) The water-filled probe is now lowered an additional distance until its gauge pressure matches that of the glycerin probe at 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m}. Estimate the additional depth required and explain the steps in your reasoning.
