Problem

A train starts from rest at station S and moves in a straight line towards station T. Phase 1: It accelerates uniformly up to a speed of 20 m/s20\,\text{m/s} while covering 400 m400\,\text{m}. Phase 2: It then travels at this constant speed for 300 s300\,\text{s}. Phase 3: Finally, it is brought to rest at station T by a uniform retardation in 30 s30\,\text{s}. (i) Find the acceleration of the train during Phase 1. (ii) Calculate the distance covered during Phase 1. (iii) Determine the distance covered during Phase 3 and the magnitude of the retardation. (iv) Calculate the total distance between stations S and T.
