Problem

Two identical negative point charges q=−5.0 μCq=-5.0\,\mu\text{C} are fixed at the vertices AA and BB of an equilateral triangle of side length 0.25 m0.25\,\text{m}. A third point charge Q=+7.0 μCQ=+7.0\,\mu\text{C} is initially held at the third vertex CC of the triangle. The charge QQ is then slowly moved to a point DD that is on the perpendicular bisector of segment ABAB, a distance 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m} from the midpoint of ABAB. Throughout the process the charges at AA and BB remain fixed. (a) Calculate the initial total electric potential energy of the three–charge system when QQ is at vertex CC. (b) Calculate the final total electric potential energy of the system when QQ is at point DD. (c) Determine the work done by the external agent in moving QQ from CC to DD. Include the proper sign in your answer. (d) Explain the physical meaning of the sign of the work you obtained in part (c) in terms of whether energy was supplied to or extracted from the system.
