Problem

A crate is suspended from a crane by a single vertical cable. While the crate is momentarily at rest, the tension in the cable is measured as 980 N980\,\text{N}. (i) Determine the mass of the crate. (ii) The crane then starts raising the crate with a constant upward acceleration of 1.5 m s−21.5\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-2}. Calculate the new tension in the cable. (iii) After reaching the desired height, the crate is lowered with a constant downward acceleration of 2.0 m s−22.0\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-2}. Compute the tension in the cable during this motion.
