Problem

For a positive integer mm, define sm(x)={xm−1x−1,x≠1,C,x=1,s_m(x)=\begin{cases} \dfrac{x^{m}-1}{x-1}, & x\ne 1, \\ C, & x=1, \end{cases} where CC is a constant to be specified. A computer algebra system produced the following numerical data for sms_m when xx is near 11:
xx0.900.900.990.991.011.011.101.10
sm(x)s_m(x)2.7102.7102.97012.97013.03013.03013.3313.331
(a) Use the table to estimate lim⁡x→1sm(x)\displaystyle\lim_{x\to1}s_m(x). State the result to the nearest 0.0010.001. (b) Deduce the integer value of mm that is consistent with the observed data. Explain your reasoning. (c) For that value of mm, verify analytically that lim⁡x→1sm(x)\displaystyle\lim_{x\to1}s_m(x) equals the value you estimated in part (a). (d) Determine the value of CC required to make sms_m continuous at x=1x=1, and briefly justify your choice.
