Problem

A rectangular brick weighs 60 N. When it is placed on a horizontal ground, two of its faces have the following areas: Face X: 0.020 m20.020\,\text{m}^2, Face Y: 0.015 m20.015\,\text{m}^2. Answer the questions given below. (i) State the magnitude of the thrust exerted by the brick on the ground. (ii) Calculate the pressure on the ground when the brick rests on Face X. (iii) Calculate the pressure when the brick is turned to rest on Face Y. (iv) Which orientation would make the brick sink deeper into soft sand? Justify your answer with reference to the quantities calculated above.
