Problem

The following set of observations was obtained for a carbon resistor kept at room temperature. Current II (A): 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.40, 0.50 Voltage VV (V): 0.62, 1.25, 1.88, 2.50, 3.12 (i) Plot a graph of VV (vertical axis) against II (horizontal axis) on graph paper, choose suitable scales and mark the points clearly. (ii) Draw the best straight line through the plotted points and determine its slope. (iii) From the same data, plot a separate graph of II (vertical axis) against VV (horizontal axis) and find the slope of this line. (iv) Using the slopes obtained in parts (ii) and (iii), evaluate the numerical product of the two slopes. Comment on how close this product is to unity and explain what this indicates about the behaviour of the resistor.
