Problem

A coil of inductance L=200 mHL = 200\,\text{mH} and resistance R=50 ΩR = 50\,\Omega is connected in series with a capacitor of capacitance C=50 μFC = 50\,\mu\text{F} to a 220 V220\,\text{V} (rms), 50 Hz50\,\text{Hz} ac mains. (i) Calculate the inductive and capacitive reactances at 50 Hz50\,\text{Hz}. (ii) Determine the resonant frequency of the circuit. (iii) If the supply frequency is adjusted to the resonant value found in part (ii), calculate the rms current in the circuit. (iv) Find the rms potential differences across (a) the inductor and (b) the capacitor at resonance. (v) Comment on your answers in part (iv) in relation to the applied voltage of 220 V220\,\text{V}.
