Problem

On a smooth billiards table a cue ball C of mass 150 g is struck so that it moves with speed 4.0 m s⁻¹ along the +x-axis. It collides elastically with an identical stationary ball D. After impact ball D is seen to move making an angle 40° below the +x-axis. (i) Calculate the speed of ball D immediately after the collision. (ii) Determine the speed and direction (angle with +x-axis, state whether above or below) of ball C after the collision. (iii) Find the impulse delivered to ball D during the impact, stating its magnitude and direction.
