Problem
Two large, flat, conducting plates are placed parallel to each other at a small separation and connected to the terminals of an ideal d.c. source so that one plate is at a higher potential than the other. Neglecting all fringe effects in the central region, answer the following:
(a) Define a uniform electric field.
(b) Explain, with reason, why the electric field between the above plates may be considered uniform over most of the region between them.
(c) Identify any two constructional or operational factors that increase the prominence of edge (fringing) effects and state one practical method to minimise the influence of each factor.
