Problem

A train of mass 2.0×105 kg2.0\times10^{5}\,\text{kg} is travelling at 30 m/s30\,\text{m/s}. The driver applies the brakes so that the speed is reduced to 10 m/s10\,\text{m/s} while the train moves 600 m600\,\text{m} along the track. (a) Calculate the work done on the train during the braking. (b) Using your answer from part (a), find the average force exerted by the brakes on the train. State clearly whether this force acts in the direction of motion or opposite to it.
