Problem

A laboratory source emits radiation from an unknown hydrogen-like ion. The strongest visible line observed from this source has wavelength 72.9 nm72.9\,\text{nm} and arises from the transition n=3→n=2n=3 \rightarrow n=2. (i) Determine the atomic number ZZ of the ion. (The wavelength of the Balmer-α\alpha line for hydrogen is 656.3 nm656.3\,\text{nm}.) (ii) Using the value of ZZ obtained, compute the ionisation energy of this ion in electron-volts. (iii) Comment on whether the calculated ionisation energy matches the trend expected from the Bohr model for hydrogen-like species.
