Problem
A long straight conductor carries a steady current of 5A vertically upward through a laboratory bench.
(i) Sketch the pattern of magnetic field lines produced around the conductor as viewed from above the bench.
(ii) State the rule you will use to find the direction of the field lines and indicate this direction on your sketch.
(iii) Calculate the magnitude of the magnetic field at points located 2cm and 4cm away from the centre of the conductor.
(iv) Based on the values obtained in part (iii), explain how the spacing between the field lines at these two distances would compare when you draw them.
