Problem

Consider a series combination of a resistor RR, an inductor LL, and a capacitor CC, connected to an AC source of rms emf VV operating at angular frequency ω\omega. (i) Derive an explicit expression for the phase angle ϕ\phi between the source voltage and the circuit current in terms of RR, LL, CC, and ω\omega. (ii) Using your result, obtain the separate conditions under which the current (a) leads the source voltage, (b) lags behind it, and (c) is in phase with it. (iii) For R=20 ΩR = 20\,\Omega, L=50 mHL = 50\,\text{mH}, C=100 μFC = 100\,\mu\text{F} and a supply frequency of 50 Hz50\,\text{Hz}, calculate the numerical value of ϕ\phi (in degrees, correct to one decimal place) and state clearly whether the current leads or lags the voltage.
