Problem

In a solar furnace, a large concave mirror of radius of curvature 4.0 m4.0\,\text{m} is used to concentrate sunlight. (a) With the help of a labelled diagram, explain why the rays reaching the mirror from the Sun may be considered parallel to its principal axis. (b) Determine the distance of the principal focus of the mirror from its pole. (c) A metal rod is placed at the focus for several minutes on a clear day. Describe qualitatively what happens to the temperature of the rod and give the reason based on the behaviour of the reflected rays.
