Problem

Consider a series RLC circuit driven at a fixed angular frequency ω\omega that is higher than its resonant angular frequency ω0\omega_0. Let the circuit parameters be L=80 mHL=80\,\text{mH} and C=5.0 μFC=5.0\,\mu\text{F}. (i) Show algebraically that, for a fixed ω\omega, the phase angle ϕ\phi tends to +90∘+90^{\circ} (pure lag) as the resistance RR tends to zero, and to 0∘0^{\circ} as RR becomes very large. (ii) Take ω=1.5 ω0\omega = 1.5\,\omega_0. Calculate ϕ\phi (in degrees) for two cases: (a) R=1 ΩR = 1\,\Omega and (b) R=100 ΩR = 100\,\Omega. (iii) Comment briefly on how the resistance influences the sharpness of the phase transition from lead to lag near resonance, using your results from part (ii).
