Problem

Consider the reciprocal function f(x)=1xf(x)=\dfrac{1}{x}, where x≠0x\neq0. Answer the following questions based on this function. (i) Calculate the value of f(x)f(x) for each of the following xx–values: −4-4, −2-2, −1-1, 12\frac12, 11, 33. Write your answers as simplified fractions. (ii) Write the six ordered pairs (x, f(x))(x,\,f(x)) obtained in part (i). (iii) Using the ordered pairs, construct a neat table that could be used for plotting the graph of y=1xy=\dfrac{1}{x} on graph paper. (iv) On a sheet of graph paper, plot the six points from your table and join them smoothly to sketch the two branches of the curve.
