Problem

Two point charges q1=+6 μCq_1=+6\,\mu\text{C} and q2=−2 μCq_2=-2\,\mu\text{C} are fixed 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} apart along a straight line in air, the positive charge being on the left. (i) Set up the equation that must be satisfied by the position coordinate xx (measured from the positive charge to the right) of any point on the line where the net electric field is zero. (ii) By solving the equation, determine all possible positions where the electric field vanishes. Express each answer as a distance from the positive charge. (iii) For each position found in part (ii), specify whether it lies to the left of the positive charge, between the charges, or to the right of the negative charge. Explain briefly in each case why the other regions do not produce additional null points.
