Problem

A series circuit containing an unknown resistor RR and an unknown capacitor CC is connected to a 120 V (r.m.s.), 60 Hz supply. The r.m.s. current is 3.0 A and the average power absorbed by the circuit is 216 W. (i) Calculate the apparent power supplied to the circuit. (ii) Determine the power factor of the circuit and state whether the current leads or lags the voltage. (iii) Find the magnitude of the circuit impedance. (iv) Obtain the resistance RR of the circuit. (v) Hence calculate the capacitance CC present in the circuit.
