Problem

A uniform thin rod of mass 3.0 kg3.0\,\text{kg} and length 0.90 m0.90\,\text{m} is found to have a moment of inertia of 1.2 kg m21.2\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{2} about an unknown axis perpendicular to the rod. (i) Determine the perpendicular distance dd of this axis from the centre of the rod. (ii) A second axis is chosen parallel to the first but passing through one end of the rod. Calculate the moment of inertia of the rod about this second axis. (iii) Find the radius of gyration of the rod about the second axis obtained in part (ii).
