Problem

Consider a simple magnifier used with a normal eye. (i) Draw a neat, labelled ray diagram showing the formation of the virtual image at infinity when an object is placed within the focal length of the lens. (ii) Starting from the expressions for the angular size of the object without the lens and with the lens, derive an expression for the magnifying power when the final image is at infinity and hence show that it is equal to Df\dfrac{D}{f}, where DD is the least distance of distinct vision and ff is the focal length of the lens. (iii) State any two assumptions made during the above derivation.
