Problem

A 15 g ice cube at 0 °C is dropped into a *very large* container of water at 20 °C. Take the specific latent heat of fusion of ice to be 334 kJ kg-1 and the specific heat capacity of water to be 4200 J kg-1 K-1. (a) Calculate the change in entropy of the ice after all the ice has turned into water at 0 °C. (b) The 15 g of water at 0 °C will eventually reach 20 °C. During this process the entropy of the 15 g of water increases by 4.5 J K-1. Calculate the overall change in entropy of the ice and the water after equilibrium is reached.
