Problem

A straight copper rod of length 0.50 m carries a constant current of 10 A. The rod lies in a region of uniform magnetic field of magnitude 0.80 T, making an angle of 60° with the direction of the field. (a) Calculate the magnitude of the magnetic force acting on the rod. (b) The current in the rod is doubled while the portion of the rod inside the field is reduced to one-half its original length. The magnetic field strength and the angle remain unchanged. Calculate the new magnitude of the force. (c) Express the new force obtained in part (b) as a percentage of the original force calculated in part (a).
