Problem

Two thin prisms of equal apex angle are placed in contact with their bases oppositely oriented so that a beam of white light enters both prisms coaxially. The first prism is made of flint glass for which the refractive indices are μr1=1.65\mu_{r1} = 1.65 (red) and μv1=1.69\mu_{v1} = 1.69 (violet). The second prism is made of crown glass having μr2=1.52\mu_{r2} = 1.52 and μv2=1.54\mu_{v2} = 1.54. (i) Derive the condition relating the apex angles A1A_1 and A2A_2 of the two prisms so that the red component suffers zero net deviation after passing through the combination. (ii) If A1=4.0∘A_1 = 4.0^\circ, determine the required value of A2A_2 to satisfy the above condition. (iii) For the value of A2A_2 found in part (ii), calculate the net angular separation produced between violet and red rays on emergence from the combination.
