Problem

An engine absorbs 5.0×103 J5.0 \times 10^{3}\,\text{J} of heat from a furnace at 600 K600\,\text{K} and delivers 2.0×103 J2.0 \times 10^{3}\,\text{J} of work per cycle. The rejected heat from the engine goes to the surrounding air at 300 K300\,\text{K}. The entire 2.0×103 J2.0 \times 10^{3}\,\text{J} of work runs a refrigerator that removes 1.2×103 J1.2 \times 10^{3}\,\text{J} of heat from a cold chamber at 270 K270\,\text{K} and expels it to the same air at 300 K300\,\text{K} each cycle. Determine the total entropy change of the universe for one combined engine–refrigerator cycle.
