Problem
A 0.50kg block is given an initial speed of 3.0ms−1 up a rough plane that is inclined at 30∘ above the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the plane is 0.20. After sliding up the plane, the block momentarily comes to rest and then slides back down the same plane until it reaches its starting point.
Air resistance is negligible.
(a) Calculate the magnitude of the block’s acceleration while it is moving up the plane.
(b) Determine the distance the block travels up the plane before coming to rest.
(c) Calculate the magnitude of the block’s acceleration while it is sliding back down the plane.
(d) Determine the total time elapsed from the instant the block is launched until it returns to its starting point at the bottom of the incline.
