Problem

A hiker walks from the campsite so that her displacement relative to the origin of a coordinate map is given by the vector d⃗ = (−1.2 km) i^  +  (2.8 km) j^\vec{d}\,=\,(-1.2\,\text{km})\,\hat{i}\; +\; (2.8\,\text{km})\,\hat{j}. (i) Find the straight-line distance of the hiker from the origin. (ii) Calculate the bearing of her position measured clockwise from due north. (iii) Draw a scaled sketch of the vector on graph paper using 1 cm1\,\text{cm} to represent 0.5 km0.5\,\text{km} and mark clearly the magnitude and bearing obtained above.
