Problem

Four resistors R1R_1, R2R_2, R3R_3, and R4R_4 form the sides of a rectangle AA–BB–CC–DD–AA in that order. A galvanometer of resistance RgR_g is connected between nodes BB and DD. An ideal cell of emf EE is connected with its positive terminal at node AA and its negative terminal at node CC. (i) Assign mesh currents I1I_1 in loop AA–BB–DD–AA and I2I_2 in loop BB–CC–DD–BB. Write the two independent closed-path equations and the junction equation at node BB. (ii) Solve these equations algebraically to obtain an expression for the galvanometer current IgI_g in terms of EE, R1R_1, R2R_2, R3R_3, R4R_4, and RgR_g. (iii) Show that Ig=0I_g = 0 when R1/R2=R3/R4R_1/R_2 = R_3/R_4, and state the practical significance of this condition.
