Problem

A running track is made by attaching semicircles to the two shorter sides of a rectangular field. The rectangular part is 80 m long and 40 m wide. Assume the semicircles are attached externally, their diameters coinciding exactly with the 40 m sides of the rectangle. Take π=227\pi = \tfrac{22}{7}. (i) Find the total length of the boundary of the track to the nearest tenth of a metre. (ii) Calculate the total area enclosed by the track. (iii) A grassy strip 3 m wide is to be laid all around the outside of the track, following its shape. Determine the area of this grassy strip.
