Problem

Two particles are moving along the xx-axis. Particle 1 starts from x=−10 mx=-10\ \text{m} with velocity 4 m s−14\ \text{m s}^{-1} along the negative xx-direction and acceleration 2 m s−22\ \text{m s}^{-2} along the positive xx-direction. Particle 2 starts from x=+2 mx=+2\ \text{m} with velocity 6 m s−16\ \text{m s}^{-1} along the positive xx-direction and acceleration 2 m s−22\ \text{m s}^{-2} along the negative xx-direction. Both start simultaneously. (a) Find the time when they collide. (b) Find the xx-coordinate where they collide.
