Problem

A projectile is launched from ground level with initial speed uu making an angle θ\theta with the horizontal. Its vertical component of velocity at any time tt is given by vy=usin⁡θ−gtv_y = u\sin\theta - gt. (i) Derive the time t1t_1 during ascent when the vertical velocity becomes one–half of its initial vertical component. (ii) Calculate the height h1h_1 of the projectile above the ground at this instant in terms of uu, θ\theta and gg. (iii) After crossing the highest point, the vertical velocity becomes half of its initial value again, but now directed downward. Derive the corresponding time t2t_2 measured from the instant of projection and obtain the height h2h_2 of the projectile at that instant. (iv) Prove that h1=h2h_1 = h_2.
