Problem

A body weighs 100 N on the surface of Earth. At an unknown altitude its weight becomes 99.3 N, while at an unknown depth it becomes 99.6 N. Assuming the changes in gg are small compared with Earth’s radius R=6.4×106 mR = 6.4 \times 10^{6}\,\text{m}, calculate (i) the altitude and (ii) the depth. Which of the two distances is greater?
