Problem

At a particular location, the acceleration due to gravity has the same value at a depth dd below the surface as it does at a height hh above the surface. Treat both dd and hh as small compared with the Earth’s radius RR. (i) Starting from the standard approximate expressions for gdg_d and ghg_h, derive a relation connecting hh and dd. (ii) If the value of gg at a depth of 16 km16\,\text{km} equals that at some altitude hh, calculate this altitude. (iii) Discuss briefly why the altitude required is not equal in magnitude to the depth, even though the values of gg are the same.
