Problem

In a horizontal pipeline carrying water (density 1000 kg m−31000\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}) a device records the stagnation pressure at the centre of the stream and the static pressure at the wall. Both pressures are led to a U-tube manometer containing mercury (density 13 600 kg m−313\,600\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}). The mercury levels in the two limbs differ by 12 cm12\,\text{cm}. (i) Calculate the speed of water in the pipe. (ii) Determine the kinetic head expressed in metres of water column corresponding to this flow speed.
