Problem

A horizontal metal plate of thickness 1.0 cm1.0\,\text{cm} and area 400 cm2400\,\text{cm}^2 supports a block of ice of mass 5.0 kg5.0\,\text{kg} at 0 ∘C0\,^{\circ}\mathrm C. The lower surface of the plate is kept in contact with steam so that its temperature remains at 100 ∘C100\,^{\circ}\mathrm C. The system quickly reaches steady conditions and all the heat conducted through the plate is used to melt the ice. The thermal conductivity of the plate material is 200 W m−1K−1200\,\text{W m}^{-1}\text{K}^{-1} and the latent heat of fusion of ice is 3.3×105 J kg−13.3\times10^{5}\,\text{J kg}^{-1}. (a) Calculate the steady rate of heat flow through the plate. (b) Determine the time required for the entire block of ice to melt under the stated conditions.
