Problem

Let f(x)=ax2+bx+cf(x)=ax^{2}+bx+c with real numbers a≠0, b, ca\ne 0,\,b,\,c. For two distinct real numbers pp and qq with p<qp<q, answer the following. (i) Show that the instantaneous rate of change of ff at any xx is f′(x)=2ax+bf'(x)=2ax+b. (ii) Prove that the average rate of change of ff on [p,q][p,q] is a(p+q)+ba(p+q)+b. (iii) Hence establish that there is exactly one point cc in (p,q)(p,q) where the instantaneous rate of change equals the average rate of change, and show that c=p+q2c=\dfrac{p+q}{2}. Justify the uniqueness of this point.
