Problem

Two identical flat trolleys, T1_1 and T2_2, of masses 5 kg5\,\text{kg} and 10 kg10\,\text{kg} respectively, are set rolling on a smooth horizontal track with the same speed of 2 m/s2\,\text{m/s}. After travelling 1 m1\,\text{m}, an automatic braking pad exerts an equal constant retarding force of 10 N10\,\text{N} on each trolley until it comes to rest. (i) Calculate the ratio of the inertia of motion of T2_2 to that of T1_1. (ii) Using Newton’s First Law, predict which trolley will travel a longer distance before coming to rest under the same retarding force. Give a reason for your answer without performing detailed force calculations. (iii) Show, with suitable algebraic steps, that for the same retarding force acting over the same time interval, the distance required to stop is directly proportional to the mass of the trolley.
