Problem

A playground swing uses a chain that has length 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} and mass 0.60 kg0.60\,\text{kg}. The chain is momentarily hanging vertically at rest before motion begins. Positions are measured downward from the top pivot point. (a) Calculate the linear mass density of the chain. (b) Determine the tension 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} below the pivot while the chain is at rest. (c) If the entire chain is then pulled upward with a uniform acceleration of 1.2 m / s21.2\,\text{m}\,/\,\text{s}^2, find the tension at the same point 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} below the pivot. (d) For parts (b) and (c), compare each value of the tension with what would be observed at the corresponding points on an ideal massless string of the same length under the same conditions. State whether the tension in the real chain is greater than, less than, or equal to that in the ideal string and provide a brief explanation.
