Problem

A factory uses a hydraulic lift whose small and large pistons have diameters of 40 mm and 280 mm, respectively. The hydraulic oil and cylinder walls can safely withstand a pressure not exceeding 4.5×106 Pa4.5\times10^{6}\,\text{Pa}. (i) Calculate the maximum load that can be lifted without exceeding the safe pressure limit. (ii) For this load, find the mechanical advantage offered by the lift. (iii) If the large piston diameter is increased by 20\%, determine whether the same load found in part (i) can now be raised with an input force of 400 N, while still remaining within the safe pressure limit. Show all working.
