Problem

Water is conveyed through a horizontal pipeline in which a Venturimeter is fitted. The inlet section of the pipe has a diameter of 25 cm25\,\text{cm} while the throat diameter is 14 cm14\,\text{cm}. A differential mercury manometer connected between the two taps of the Venturimeter shows a reading of 20 cm20\,\text{cm} of mercury. Assume: density of water ρw=1000 kg m−3\rho_{w}=1000\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}, density of mercury ρHg=13600 kg m−3\rho_{Hg}=13600\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3} and g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (a) Calculate the volume flow rate of water through the pipe. (b) The throat is now replaced by another throat whose diameter is to be chosen so that, with the same upstream conditions, the manometer shows a reading of 10 cm10\,\text{cm} of mercury. Determine the new throat diameter (to the nearest millimetre). (c) Comment briefly on how the change in throat diameter affects the pressure difference and hence the accuracy of the Venturimeter.
