Problem

Two solid cubes, one of wood and the other of aluminium, are of identical size. The density of wood is 0.65 g cm−30.65\,\text{g\,cm}^{-3} and the density of aluminium is 2.7 g cm−32.7\,\text{g\,cm}^{-3}. Both cubes are gently released on the surface of water. (i) Define density. (ii) Explain, without performing any calculations, which cube will float and which will sink when placed on water. State the reason for your answer. (iii) If both cubes are now placed in kerosene whose density is 0.80 g cm−30.80\,\text{g\,cm}^{-3}, predict the behaviour of each cube and justify your answer.
